Supramolecular Chemistry finished projects

Supramolecular Chemistry finished projects include:

1. Large functional resorcinarene macrocycles, MOBJD39

Project duration: 14.02.17 – 13.02.19

Principal Investigator: Dr. Jasper Adamson

For practical applications, including drug delivery, catalysis and sensors, it is important to synthesize large macrocycles with a spacious cavity. Various papers state that resorcin[4]arenes tetrameric macrocycles are often too small for binding with larger guest molecules and hence their practical applicability is limited. In this proposal, we challenge this situation by synthesising larger resorcin[8]arene macrocycles with fixed conformations and study their structures by means of NMR spectrocopy and single crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD). The second aim of the project is to characterise host-guest chemistry of the as-synthesised macrocycles with diffusion ordered NMR spectroscopy (DOSY) and SCXRD to tailor the macrocycles further for practical applications. The chosen guest molecules include quinoline, isoquinoline and quinoline carboxylic acid and drug molecules (Clonidine, Lamivudine and Amiloride) that are too large for complexation with existing resorcin[4]arenes.
