The activities
of ETS
The very first effort of our new-born Society was to organize a Joint
Conference of Scandinavian Society of Cell Toxicology and Estonian
Society of Toxicology (SSCT&ETS’98).The
main topics of the Conference were in vitro toxicology, biochemical
toxicology, ecotoxicology and environmental risk assessment - the main
research areas of the members of ETS and SSCT. Altogether 31 oral and
27 poster presentations were held on October 23 - 26, 1998 in Tallinn.
In April 2003 a
seminar about Good
Laboratory Practice was organized. The financial support was
obtained from IUTOX
and National Institute
of Chemical Physics and Biophysics. The lectures were held by Dr.
Andrew Wadell (Managing Director, TOWER MAINS LIMITED).
ETS and its
members have been involved in the Btox program started
by University of Uppsala to promote the toxicology education in
Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. The Btox program has involved the
education programs for the future toxicology teachers as well as
provided MSc-level courses for students.
In 2005 ETS was again involved in organizing an international conference "Chemicals, Human and Environment" together with the Scandinavian Society of Cell Toxicology (ETS&SSCT´05). The conference bringing together 80 participant from 17 different countries was held in Toila. The main topics of the conference were toxicity testing in vitro and 3R, alternative methods in toxicit testing: QSAR, ecvotoxicity tests and 3R, cell toxicology and toxicity mechanisms, development of new regulatory toxicity tests, neurotoxicology in vitro, new in vitro bioanalysis methods, environmental pollution and ecotoxicology, environmental pollution and risks for humans, toxicological education in Estonia. Within the conference a Cafe Scientifique (organized by ETS and British Council Estonia), where prof. John Timbrell from King´s College, London was talking about "The Poison Paradox. How and when chemicals are toxic", took place.
The last major event of ETS was seminar "The three R-s and the implictaion of REACH" held in 26th of May 2006 in National Institute of Chemical Physics and Biophysics, where Dr. Robert Combes (FRAME, UK) was introducing the recent EU chemicals policy REACH and the 3R principle, which propagates the use of reduced numberd of test animals in chemicals toxicity testing.
